Wednesday 8th November brings a good news story from the City of Newry. The official unveiling of football legend Pat Jennings statue is happening around noon in Kildare Street, Newry. A large crowd is expected with familiar faces from the sporting world mingling with Pat’s fanbase coming from all corners of Northern Ireland, whom he represented 119 times during a professional football career spanning three decades with also Watford, Tottenham and Arsenal football clubs.

PRO for the steering committee Friends of Big Pat (FOBP) that commissioned the statue Kevin Mc Allister stated, “The community of Newry has witnessed horrendous flooding in the City in the past week which has left some businesses struggling financially as they attempt to reopen to the public. It hasn’t been good and our thoughts are with those businesses. This coming week we have a good news story for the locality with the unveiling of our own Pat Jennings statue which hopefully will bring more people into the city particularly with Christmas looming. On Wednesday we look forward to a great occasion with everyone welcomed to join us in recognising this legend of a man who has always tried to do his best for his beloved Newry and Northern Ireland. Pat was involved with the delegation to Westminster for City status for Newry back in 2002 and his involvement in local and national charities has been recognised across Northern Ireland. As a goalkeeper he was phenomenal, a hero of Spain 82 for Northern Ireland and over a number of years he was arguably the best in the world. I would ask everyone to come along on Wednesday 8th November to witness this fantastic statue of his likeness being unveiled.”

The unveiling ceremony is being hosted by BBC Sports Presenter Stephen Watson who is delighted to be involved as a committee member of FOBP. He stated, “I am honoured to host the unveiling of Pat’s statue in his home city of Newry. It’s a fitting tribute to one of Northern Ireland’s greatest sporting ambassadors who, in my opinion, is the greatest goalkeeper the world has ever seen. Newry has been hit hard by the recent flooding, and I hope Pat’s statue on Kildare street will be a major attraction to bring many people to the city to support local businesses. I know how proud Pat is of his roots in Newry – and I think this statue will also show how proud Newry and Northern Ireland is of him.”

FOBP have asked anyone who is attending to arrive at Kildare street Newry before 11.30am, the unveiling will commence at 11.45am and everyone is welcome to this wonderful occasion when we honour Pat Jennings. Newry and Northern Ireland’s sporting legend.
